In this seminar, we dive into the secret sauce that makes simulated airplanes feel like the real thing: modeling real aircraft control systems. We’ll explore how simulators replicate features like stability augmentation and fly-by-wire control laws (digital rules that turn pilot inputs into smooth maneuvers). Discover why handling qualities–essentially how an aircraft “feels” to fly–are so crucial for immersion. 

Drawing on my extensive experience in high-fidelity modeling and eVTOL flight dynamics, I’ll illustrate how advanced simulation techniques not only recreate the behavior of traditional aircraft but also capture the unique challenges of next-gen flying vehicles. From a trusty Cessna to a modern jetliner and even a cutting-edge eVTOL, real-world examples demonstrate how control systems and flight dynamics work together to create an authentic experience.

Vaibhav "Billy" Kumar is an aerospace engineer specializing in Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC), with over six years of experience designing and validating flight control systems for advanced aerial vehicles. As an early-stage employee at Joby Aviation, Vaibhav has played a key role in shaping innovative technologies that are transforming urban air mobility through safe, efficient, and sustainable flight solutions. He previously founded AirLogs, a logbook research tool aimed at simplifying aircraft maintenance workflows. 

Vaibhav’s expertise spans flight dynamics, sensor modeling, control systems, and high-fidelity simulations, supported by hands-on experience as a private pilot and extensive involvement in aircraft maintenance. His contributions to the aerospace community include publications in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, earning recognition such as Aviation Week’s Twenty 20s Award, Atlanta Inno’s 25 Under 25, and accolades from AIAA and VFS. 

Vaibhav is passionate about mentoring and supporting aspiring aerospace professionals through speaking engagements and active participation in industry events. His mission is to advance flight control systems and autonomy, making aviation safer, more efficient, and sustainable, while inspiring future innovators in aerospace.
